Growing Roses

Are you afraid of growing roses? Don’t be! Modern rose plant varieties are more disease-resistant and easier to grow than ever before. Holly Days Nursery carries a great selection of beautiful rose varieties in stunning colors that will reward you throughout the season.

Requirements

Roses require 6 or more hours of direct sun to do their best and flower well. Add organic matter to the existing soil when planting your rose to create a well-drained planting bed. We carry Happy Frog Soil Conditioner, Mushroom Compost and Tree, Shrub & Rose Garden Soil to improve the native clay soil in our area.

Knock Out Roses

One of the most popular landscape roses is the Knock Out Rose.  These award-winning shrub roses come in an assortment of colors from white and sunny yellow to coral, pink and cherry-red. They repeat-bloom from spring to frost. Knock Out roses can be planted individually as a focal point, among other shrubs, or in large groups to create a colorful hedge. Incorporate perennials and annuals to create a festival of color, texture, and interest.

Blooming its heart out, The Fairy Rose produces abundant clusters of small, double, clear pink flowers from early summer to frost with a mild apple fragrance. This popular and award-winning shrub rose is compact, has a gracefully spreading habit and is very disease resistant.

Drift Roses

Drift Roses have a low, manageable habit that makes them perfect for gardens small to large. They brighten up borders, fill in empty spaces, meander around established plants, and can create a lovely groundcover. Drift Roses are repeat-blooming and disease-resistant plants that grow 18” high and 30” wide.

Climbing Roses

Climbing Roses are a favorite for arbors, trellises, and fences in sunny locations. Most can grow 8-12’ and be trained to fit your structure. Holly Days Nursery has Winners Circle Climbing Rose with its fire-engine-red flowers and foliage that turns from green to deep burgundy in the fall with orange rose hips. Westerland Climbing Rose has a marvelous fragrance to go with its large sprays of ruffled apricot-orange blossoms. Lavender Crush Climbing Rose features full, old-fashioned flowers with lavender tones and creamy white reverse with an intense citrus-blossom and rose aroma.

Grandiflora Roses

Noted for its amethyst flowers, Twilight Zone Grandiflora Rose has exquisite clusters of strongly scented, large, very double, old-fashioned flowers. This rose blooms in flushes from spring to fall and is great in beds, borders and flowering hedges reaching 3-5’ tall and 2-3’ wide.

Tree Roses

Last but not least, the Nitty Gritty Tree Roses in yellow or pink are available now. These magnificent plants create a dramatic effect in the landscape. Tree Roses are ideal focal points and are great to frame an entrance or create height to a mixed border. Nitty Gritty Rose Trees produce an abundance of sweetly fragrant blooms in waves from late spring to fall, while offering excellent disease resistance and easy-to-care for habit.
