Warmer temps and above average sunshine is making it a nice January for winter gardening and great time to get out and tend to the garden. These pre-spring gardening moves keep you ahead of the game and ready to be an all-star come spring! In addition to getting a nice head start it is a nice way to continue moving around throughout the winter.
Winter Gardening & Trimming
Now is an excellent time to trim many deciduous trees and shrubs—as well as trimming and tending to evergreens. Trimming your plants prior to spring flush is key to keeping your garden clean and tidy before the spring time gardening frenzy. Also, be sure to be mindful of the length, timing, and style of pruning and trimming to ensure you are not over-shearing your plant.
What To Trim
Hand pruning and even large pruning to most hardwood and ornamentals can be done now. Maples, oaks, zelkova, hickory, locust trees are all on the list. Ornamental trees such as Japanese maples, amelanchier and lilacs can all be done now. If you have any questions about winter gardening or trimming certain varieties of plants, you can always reach out to our garden center experts. We are available Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm.
Watching What You Trim
Watch what you trim on your flowering trees. Hard trimming will reduce your flowers for spring. Work on cleaning your trees from dead wood, cross branching, and overall balance. Similarly, Trimming overgrown evergreens such as Holly Trees and Arborvitae can also be done now. Therefore, take advantage of the beautiful weather we are having and get ahead of your garden because remember… the garden never sleeps.
